  15. <p>     DIED. DORIS DUKE, 80, American Tobacco Co. heiress, socialite
  16. and philanthropist; in Beverly Hills, California. Called the
  17. "richest girl in the world" after she inherited most of her
  18. father's millions at the age of 12, Duke has kept gossip columnists
  19. busy for decades with her luxurious life and unhappy romances.
  20. She drew attention in 1988 when she posted $5 million bail for
  21. her friend Imelda Marcos and again when she adopted a Hare Krishna
  22. devotee, who is now suing for breach of contract. Among her
  23. many philanthropic interests were Duke University, aids research,
  24. the environment, animal rights and historic preservation. Childless,
  25. she leaves an estate of at least $750 million.
