- <p> DIED. DORIS DUKE, 80, American Tobacco Co. heiress, socialite
- and philanthropist; in Beverly Hills, California. Called the
- "richest girl in the world" after she inherited most of her
- father's millions at the age of 12, Duke has kept gossip columnists
- busy for decades with her luxurious life and unhappy romances.
- She drew attention in 1988 when she posted $5 million bail for
- her friend Imelda Marcos and again when she adopted a Hare Krishna
- devotee, who is now suing for breach of contract. Among her
- many philanthropic interests were Duke University, aids research,
- the environment, animal rights and historic preservation. Childless,
- she leaves an estate of at least $750 million.
